Arusha é a localização perfeita se querem visitar a região mas também fazer alguns safaris – está situada no centro de tudo! Por isso decidimos dormir aqui toda a primeira parte da viagem e simplesmente fazer várias atividades diárias.

Passámos os primeiros dois dias a visitar a região de Arusha, Kilimanjaro e outras vilas perto. Estas primeiras fotos foram tiradas na região de Meru e aquecem tanto o meu coração. Apanhámos estas crianças no momento em que estavam a sair da escola e eles correram para mim para me abraçar e segurar a minha mão! Não nos conheciamos e eu não percebia uma palavra do que eles diziam (excepto ‘jambo!’) mas ainda assim, havia tanto amor.

Arusha is the perfect location if you want to visit the the area but also do some safaris – it is right in the middle of everything! So we decided to sleep here for the whole first part of the trip and simply do a lot of day trips.

We spent the first two days of our trip exploring Arusha, Kilimanjaro and a few other villages close by. These first pictures were taken in the Meru region and they warm my heart so much. We caught these kids coming out of school and they just ran to hug me and give me their hand! We didn’t know each other and I didn’t understand a single word they said (besides ‘jambo!’), but sill, there was so much love.

O café é um produto super importante da região. Ambos os dias aprendemos sobre esta cultura, como o produzir e fizemos o nosso próprio café do zero (abrir o grão, torrar, bater até ficar em pó, etc). Foi tão bom sentar em torno de uma mesa com os locais, café quente na mão e simplesmente divagar sobre a vida.

 

Coffee is an important asset in the region. Both days we learnt about the coffee culture, how to produce it and actually made our own coffee from scratch (opening the beans, roasting, pouding until it is powder, etc). It was so nice to sit around the table with the locals, hot coffee in our hands and just ramble about life.

Esta foi a primeira atividade que fizemos e talvez a minha favorita de toda a viagem! Passámos o dia com os Maasai, aprendemos mais sobre o estilo de vida, dançámos com eles, aprendemos a fazer fogo e a caçar um leão… um mundo completamente diferente mas tão tão interessante. Um povo fascinante.

 

This was actually the first thing we did when we arrived and maybemy favorite activity of the whole trip! We spent a day with the Maasai, learn about their way of life, danced with them, learnt how to make fire and catch a lion… a whole different world but so so interesting. Such fascinating people.

Parte da experiência esteve também relacionada com comida, claro. Estava um pouco preocupada em ficar doente por isso tive muito cuidado onde comia. E, claro, nunca bebi água da torneira!! Felizmente, tudo correu bem. E comi tãooo bem!! Honestamente, achei a cozinha um pouco repetitiva (muito arroz, banana, – eles têm literalmente 30+ tipos de banana – carne estufada e alguns legumes). Mas ainda assim, tão tão bom. Experimentei o famoso vinho de banana (e não aconselho ahah), um mel especial e outras especiarias locais. Ainda hoje as pessoas tentam curar doenças com plantas antes de ir ao hospital. Por isso também experimentei alguns remédios locais feitos de limão, gengibre, pimenta preta, cardamomo, sementes de erva-doce, noz-moscada, canela, cravo… e a lista continua!

 

Part of the experience was also food related, of course. I was a bit worried about getting sick so I was always very careful with where I ate. And, of course, never drank water from the tap!! Thankfully, everything went well. And I ate soooo well! Honestly, I found the cusine a bit repetitive (a lot of rice, banana, – they literally have 30+ types of bananas – stewed meat and a few vegetables). But sill, very very good. I have tried the famous banana wine (which I do not recommend ahah), a special honey and some other local spices. Still today, people always try to cure their diseases with plants first before going to the hospital. So I have also tried a few local remedies made with lemon grass, ginger, black pepper, cardamom, fennel seeds, nutmeg, cinammon, clove… the list goes on and on!

Arusha também é o lugar ideal para cascadas lindíssimas. A que viram no meu primeiro post da Tanzânia é a cascada Materuni que vem do Kilimanjaro. Esta é a cascada Meru, do monte Meru. A água estava gelada mas ainda assim decidi tomar um banho, só pela bucket list!

 

Arusha is also the place for beautiful waterfalls. The one you saw on my first Tanzania post is the Materuni waterfall which comes from the Kilimanjaro. This one is the Meru waterfall, from the mount Meru. The water was freezing cold but I still decided to take a swim for the bucket list!

E, finalmente, tive a oportunidade de visitar um miradouro em Arusha – Meru Paradise View. Um local bonito para relaxar e apreciar a vista. E andar de baloiço! Libertem o vosso lado infantil!

 

And, finally, I had the chance of visiting a viewpoint of Arusha – Meru Paradise View. A beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the view. And ride a swing! Set your inner child freeeee!
