ARUSHA, KILIMANJARO

Arusha Kilimanjaro

Arusha, Kilimanjaro

Arusha, Kilimanjaro

Arusha is the perfect location if you want to visit the the area but also do some safaris – it is right in the middle of everything! So we decided to sleep here for the whole first part of the trip and simply do a lot of day trips.

We spent the first two days of our trip exploring Arusha, Kilimanjaro and a few other villages close by. These first pictures were taken in the Meru region and they warm my heart so much. We caught these kids coming out of school and they just ran to hug me and give me their hand! We didn’t know each other and I didn’t understand a single word they said (besides ‘jambo!’), but sill, there was so much love.

Coffee is an important asset in the region. Both days we learnt about the coffee culture, how to produce it and actually made our own coffee from scratch (opening the beans, roasting, pouding until it is powder, etc). It was so nice to sit around the table with the locals, hot coffee in our hands and just ramble about life.

This was actually the first thing we did when we arrived and maybemy favorite activity of the whole trip! We spent a day with the Maasai, learn about their way of life, danced with them, learnt how to make fire and catch a lion… a whole different world but so so interesting. Such fascinating people.

Part of the experience was also food related, of course. I was a bit worried about getting sick so I was always very careful with where I ate. And, of course, never drank water from the tap!! Thankfully, everything went well. And I ate soooo well! Honestly, I found the cusine a bit repetitive (a lot of rice, banana, – they literally have 30+ types of bananas – stewed meat and a few vegetables). But sill, very very good. I have tried the famous banana wine (which I do not recommend ahah), a special honey and some other local spices. Still today, people always try to cure their diseases with plants first before going to the hospital. So I have also tried a few local remedies made with lemon grass, ginger, black pepper, cardamom, fennel seeds, nutmeg, cinammon, clove… the list goes on and on!

Arusha, Kilimanjaro

Arusha is also the place for beautiful waterfalls. The one you saw on my first Tanzania post is the Materuni waterfall which comes from the Kilimanjaro. This one is the Meru waterfall, from the mount Meru. The water was freezing cold but I still decided to take a swim for the bucket list!

Libertem o vosso lado infantil!

And, finally, I had the chance of visiting a viewpoint of Arusha – Meru Paradise View. A beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the view. And ride a swing! Set your inner child freeeee!

JAMBO TANZANIA

Jambo Tanzania

Jambo Tanzania

Jambo, Tanzania

E apenas as primeiras 24 horas!

Jambo, Tanzania

Finally I get to tell you about Tanzania! And oh god… that was a hell of a ride…

I will make you the short version: our flight got delayed and we ended up losing our connection flights to Kilimajaro. It was 11pm and after a lot of fighting, we find a new flight – the next day, in the evening. Problem: We do not have a visa to get out of the airport. So we go to another counter to do it (I’m stress crying in my picture) and find a hotel where we can spend the night. We end up spending one full day in Nairobi so we decide to visit the city. We didn’t have any connection so we ask the driver that brought us to pick us up in the same place, a couple of hours later. He never came.

Somehow we  managed to arrive at the airport and catch our flight. Arrived in Kilimajaro, everyone gets their bags but us. I ask the security to go look for them in the plane that was parked in front of the airport door (it is another world there, I swear). He comes back and says there is nothing inside. So there we go to fill in the papers in a shady office where I end up finding my bag that apparently managed to catch both the flights I had lost. The second bag simply stayed in Nairobi and appeared 24 hours later.

Yes, I guarantee you this is the short version. And just the first 24 hours! But overall, it was all worth it. You can do a bit of everything in Tanzania: experience a new culture, try new food, do a safari, go snorkeling, go hiking or simply rest at the beach with turquoise water. The chances that you won’t find something you like to do are nearly zero. At least I didn’t even have the time to get bored! So much to see, so much to do… And I will tell you everything about it!

So. So.

SUNSETZ

Sunsetz

Sun sets, I want to hear your voice. A love that nobody could destroy.

Always catching sunsetz. Temos quase sempre a luz do sol.

Always catching sunstez. I got to see this beautiful one in Saint Martin de Ré. It was my second time there and I certify it as a great sunset spot. The crazy thing about France (well, from someone that comes from the South of Europe), it is that the sun rises at 5am and sets atfter 10pm in the Summer! How amazing is that?  We almost always have daylight.

I wish it came with the summer weather included tho. Because I am still wearing knits and heavy cots in the middle of June! I want to start dreaming about Summer but with this atmosphere my vacations still seem so far away! Thankfully I have the eurocup now to remind me about the beauty of summer. Who are you rooting for?

So. So.
